Job Completed

.
The historic old Prosperity Baptist Church on the hill by the cemetery now has a new roof. The job was completed today at 7:45pm.

Today the last sections of roofing went into place...

The snow blocks and all the trim was completed...

The roof of the steeple had been finished...

And as the sun slowly sank in the west behind the bell tower a tired group of workers were filled with a sense of accomplishment as they thanked God for the opportunity to participate in this project.

I hope to have more pictures of the workers posted here in a few days.

Monday At Prosperity Baptist Church

The truck with the 55 foot lift bucket was just barely long enough for Brad to reach the roof section of the steeple.

With lots of stretching he was able to get the new roofing in place.

Almost all the main roof section and some of the lower sections were finished today.

We saw the following poster on one of the bulletin boards.  Pay special attention to the last paragraph!  David did play his violin on Sunday but they must have been disappointed in the rest of our musical talent.

Click photo to enlarge.

Here is a sketch of the building when it was first built, before the nursery wing and fellowship hall additions were added.

The church building was constructed in 1894.

Facebook users can find more pictures on LeAnne's Photo Album.

The weather has been cool since we got here with a few light showers throughout the day. Today a downpour halted all the work at 6pm.

Sunday in Rocky Comfort

Rocky Comfort is just a small village that is far past its prime. It looks like there may have been activity here years ago but many of its citizens have moved away. Many of the houses are abandoned and in disrepair.

The downtown stores are also abandoned giving the appearance of a ghost town.

Only the post office is still in use.

The church is one of the nicest buildings in town.  People from the surrounding area gather here for worship.  We met with them for the 11am worship service.  Our presence just about doubled the attendance numbers.

Pastor George preached a good sermon.

His wife Pat played the music.

The soloist was good.

After the worship service we all enjoyed a pot luck dinner in the fellowship hall.

Day One

This week 14 people for FBC Grandview headed to Rocky Comfort, Missouri to assist the Prosperity Baptist Church with some building improvements including a new roof and repairs to the steeple. Making the trip are Robert and Rhonda Hurt, Ricky and Tammy Vanzandt, Bill and Peggy Lyle, Brad Quisenberry, David and Paula Quisenberry, David, Brandt and Leanne Self, and Kenneth and Jerry Pipes. Ben and Bobbie Mosley were unable to make the trip and we really miss them.

Here is the building that will have a new roof before we head back to Texas.

Their church sign greeted us when we drove in!

Inspecting the steeple.

Climbing gear helped get started on the steep roof.

Soon preperation was underway for installing the metal roof system.

This is a picture of the building taken in the fall when the maple trees are in full color.
